OKEFENOKEE SWAMP CANOE TRIP

Here's a picture of an Alligator - this is what everyone wants to see and that's a good part of the reason that we went! Altogether we saw 62 gators by Devin's count. Two stayed around our camping platform (called a "Chickee") all during the second night. When it got dark, we got out flashllights and were very surprised to see how many glowing pairs of eyes we could see - GRIN. No problems with night-time raids from the raccoons here!

This is Devin, out for an early morning paddle by himself. He really is begining to turn into a fine canoer.

A group shot of the entire gang at the end of the trip. We all made it!
Myself and Josiah pushing the water behind us - GRIN

This is what we camped on each night. This one was in a beautiful location and completely surrounded by water. The water looked to be about 12-18 inches deep. But that was just because it was the "floating earth" that Okefenokee Swamp is famous for. If you stuck a paddle down thru the bottom - it popped out into another couple feet of water. At night the sound of millions of frogs was almost deafening! Everything from spring peeper types to big ol bullfrogs that sounded like they smoked for many years.

Jeremiah and Matt paddling along!

Another fine scaley friend! All in all it was a great trip. We saw lots of wildlife, plants (plant pictures to follow tomorrow), had wonderful lessons in how to paddle a canoe, spent valuable time with family.

MENU for the SWAMPERS
DAY #1 - Lunch - PB&J on pita.
Dinner - Spaghetti with meat sauce, oil-cured olives, italian bread.
DAY #2 - Breakfast - Eggs & Bacon, hot chocolate and coffee.
Lunch - Tuna salad on Pita & granola bars.
Dinner - M&C with hotdogs and smoked sausage, fig newtons for desert.
DAY #3 - Breakfast
- Homemade granola with UHT milk, hot chocolate and coffee.
Lunch
- Thought we'd be back before lunch but we were late! So we just ate everything we had left - pudding, bananas, string cheese and the last of the lemonade.

Got to go and get my SS lesson ready for tomorrow!

No the gators can't get on teh platform unless the water level rises a few feet. There is a lower dock where you tie up the canoes and I have heard that sometimes there may be a gator sunning on that one. But they just slide off when people come.
